# Display Message

Display Message shows a message to the user and can optionally speak it.

1. Within the edit Simulation section of the HyperSkill Desktop application, navigate to the State Machine tab.
2. Click on the desired state and, from the dropdown in either the entry or exit actions, select the type Display Message.
3. Press the + button to add the action to the action list.

4. Enter the message you want to display in the text field.
5. Choose a **Display Type**: **Display Only** shows the message as text, **Spoken Only** speaks it without showing text, and **Display and Spoken** does both.
6. If you chose **Spoken Only** or **Display and Spoken**, the voice settings appear. Choose the voice that speaks the message. With **Display Only** these fields are hidden.

## Voice settings

These fields appear only when **Display Type** is **Spoken Only** or **Display and Spoken**:

* **Audio Output Type:** **Text to Speech** generates the audio.
* **Voice:** The list of voices available for generation.
* **Custom voice ID:** A text field for entering a custom voice ID. Custom voice IDs work with both ElevenLabs and Google Text-to-Speech.

**Note:** If the message is spoken, the state machine does not move on to the next action in the sequence (if there are multiple) until the system has finished speaking the message.
