# Setup

To enable painting, mark your virtual objects as paintable. Painting tools are covered in [Spray Painting](/hyperskill-studio-authoring/virtual-entities/special-virtual-objects/painting/spray-painting.md) and [Pen](/hyperskill-studio-authoring/virtual-entities/special-virtual-objects/painting/pen.md).

## Make a virtual object paintable

In authoring mode:

1. Add a custom attribute named "Paintable" of type "bool". Set the value to "True" to make the object paintable. The object is no longer paintable if you set it to "False".
2. \[Optional] Add a custom attribute named "Coverage" of type "float" to track how much of the object is painted. The value starts at 0.00 and goes up to 100.00.

The virtual object is now paintable.

## Requirements

The people creating and uploading the assets should make sure the following are met so the object is fully paintable:

* When the object is uploaded, read/write must be enabled on the mesh.
* The mesh must be a single mesh (Mesh or skinned mesh).
* The mesh should be stitched correctly.
* The mesh should be properly UV wrapped.

## Troubleshooting

Not all virtual objects are made the same. Some objects may not paint correctly or at all:

* **Object does not paint:** The model may have been uploaded without read/write enabled. Ask the uploader to upload the asset with read/write enabled for the mesh.
* **Only some parts paint:** The collider(s) may be blocking the paint from reaching the object. Adjust the colliders so the painting tool can apply paint.
* **Paint appears in random spots:** Check that the virtual object meets the requirements above.
